What we do
We translate every major home equity investment into one comparable number, the effective annual cost of the money, and we explain the product in plain English through our guide and HEI University. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, and it is free.
Who we are
HEI Calculator is built and maintained by a small, independent team.
Our sister site
HEI Compare is run by the same team. It lays every provider out side by side, with full reviews and head-to-head comparisons. Both sites use the same provider terms and the same cost model, so the numbers always match.
Independence and disclosure
- We do not sell home equity investments and we are not a lender or broker.
- No provider pays us for placement, rankings, or reviews. Rankings in the calculator come only from the math applied to your inputs.
- If that ever changes, for example through a referral partnership, we will disclose it clearly on every page where it applies, and it will never change how the calculator ranks providers.
How we verify provider terms
Every default term in the calculator follows the same rules:
- Provider first. We use each provider's own published materials, including its worked examples, before anything else.
- Reputable reviews second. Where a provider does not state a term on its own site, we use a recent, reputable review and label that term as coming from a third party.
- No guessing. If a provider does not publish a pricing term at all, we do not invent one. We mark that provider as needing your quote.
- Dated and linked. Every term is listed with its source links and the date we last verified it, on our provider terms & sources page.
Editorial standards
- Education, not advice. We explain how products work and what they cost. We do not tell you which to choose.
- Plain English. If a term needs a definition, we define it.
- Balanced. We cover when an HEI makes sense and when it does not, including its risks.
- Reviewed and dated. Every page shows when it was last reviewed.
Corrections
If you spot an outdated term, a broken source, or an error, email hello@heicalculator.com. We fix confirmed errors promptly and update the page's review date. Providers are welcome to send current, published terms for us to verify.
